Pirates fall in dual team playoffs

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team saw its 2012 season come to an end with a 5-2 loss to host Ventura College in the seminfinal round of the Southern California Regional Dual Team Playoffs on Tuesday.

Coast (12-5), seeded fourth in the regional bracket, went up against the second-seeded Pirates of Ventura and pushed the competition into doubles before finally giving up that fifth and final match.

In singles, Ventura picked up wins in the first four matches before OCC pressed the issue with wins in Nos. 5-6 singles. Nicole Pham earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over VC's Carolyn Morris and Pham's teammate, Remi Sutton rallied for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Grace Hanamoto, cutting Ventura's lead to 4-2 after singles play.

But that would be as close as OCC would get as a 6-0, 6-0 loss to open doubles play ended the afternoon for both teams.

There is still plenty of tennis to be played by the Pirates in 2012. This weekend, Coast will have several competitors at the 2012 Ojai Invitational and in two weeks, the Southern California Regionals for singles and doubles will take place.
