Riggs named OCC's Female Athlete of the Year
COSTA MESA – Women's volleyball standout Karlee Riggs has been named the 2013 Orange Coast College Female Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the Pirate head coaches of all 22 sports on campus.
Riggs, a current member of the University of Hawaii's Sand Volleyball team, will play for the Rainbow Wahine next season.
Riggs leaves quite a legacy at OCC after posting some record-setting numbers during her two-year career as a Pirate.
The Pirates posted a combined 36-8 record during Riggs' career, including back-to-back trips to the postseason. Riggs finishes as Coast's all-time single-season leader in kills-per-game at 5.65, which set in 2012, topping her 4.93 average she set in 2011. Her 748 kills over her career is second-best all time at OCC and she finished ninth all-time in hitting percentage at .319 for her career.
Last year, Riggs led the entire state in kills per game at 5.65. She was the Orange Empire Conference's Most Valuable Player and was an All-State selection for her fine play. She led the OEC in overall kills (373), was second in hitting percentage, ninth in aces and 10th in digs.
As a freshman, Riggs led Coast with 375 kills, was a first-team, All-Orange Empire Conference selection and an All-Southern California Regional selection, leading the conference in kills per game. She was also sixth in the OEC in hitting percentage, 12th in digs and 17th in aces.
In both seasons, Riggs was named OCC's Most Valuable Player.
