Pirates hang on to top Hornets in five
FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team were pushed to the limit on Wednesday night before finally defeating Fullerton College in five games in Orange Empire Conference action.
Karlee Riggs had 30 kills and 16 digs, while Dana Nicholson added five kills and season-best 31 digs to lead the state-ranked No. 2 Pirates past the No. 22-ranked Hornets, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10.
Nicholson's 31-dig performance is the tied for seventh-best in OCC women's volleyball history for a single match, joining Kiwi Winkler (2006), Lauren Wilson (2000) and Melissa Sherman (2003).
Morgan Link added eight kills and three block assists for the first-place Pirates (14-0, 8-0 in OEC), while setter Allison Lumsden dished out 51 assists.
For the Hornets (7-8, 3-5), Jordyn Hecker led the offense with 22 kills and 17 digs, while Laura Hartzheim contributed 55 assists and Celeste Snyder came up with 31 digs.
Orange Coast will return to the friendly surroundings of the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Saddleback, beginning at 7 p.m.
