Pirates outlast Rustlers in five-game thriller
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- If there ever was going to be a "statement match" for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team, Friday night's contest at first-place Golden West was going to be it and in the end, the Pirates showed the fight of a champion.
Overcoming a quality team in the Rustlers and their loud and raucous crowd inside the GWC gym, the Pirates pulled out a five-game thriller, winning the match by the scores of 26-24, 21-25, 30-28, 18-25, 15-13.
Dillon Emery led the way for OCC (6-4, 3-1 in Pacific Coast Conference) with 25 kills, while Rusty Sary and Chris Van Vuuren each added 12 kills. Victor Schafer anchored the defense with 10 digs, while setter Michael Ensign dished out 52 assists.
The Pirates will look to keep their momentum going strong on Friday night when they play at San Diego City College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday, March 21 against Palomar, also at 6 p.m..
