Pirates return to top of PCC mountain!
COSTA MESA -- Champions of the Pacific Coast Conference for the second year in a row, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team is preparing to get into playoff form and on Wednesday night, the Pirates closed out their home schedule with a three-game sweep over visiting San Diego City College.
It was a balanced offense for the Pirates (13-4, 10-1 in PCC) as Dillon Emery and Chris Van Vuuren each had six kills to lead the offense, while four players -- Rusty Sary, John Christian, Sam Jergens and Tim Frydendall -- each added four.
Victor Schaefer picked up nine digs, while Michael Lakin distributed the offense with 24 assists.
It was a rough and ragged start to the match for the Pirates, who led 16-11 before five straight Knights' points tied the game up. OCC held a pair of set points at 24-22, but could not finish as a kill and block by SDCC tied things up at 24.
Finally, the Pirates put the game away with kills by Sary and Emery as OCC won, 26-24.
The Pirates controlled most of Game 2 as they jumped out to a 20-11 lead before another big run by the Knights cut the deficit down to 20-17.
However, Coast regrouped and scored five of the last six points to take a two-game lead in the match.
The third game saw the Pirates take control of things from start to finish. They led 19-11 and never looked back as they closed out their home schedule 9-1 for the season.
OCC will play at Palomar College on Friday (6 p.m.) before advancing to the State Semifinals on Thursday at Long Beach City College (time and opponent TBA).
