Coast sweeps away Olympians

COSTA MESA -- It took just over an hour, but the fans of the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team got their money's worth as the Pirates posted a three-game sweep over visiting San Diego Mesa on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Dillon Emery led the Pirates (5-4, 2-1 in Pacific Coast Conference) with 14 kills, while John Christian added 10 kills. Teammate Chris Van Vuuren chipped in seven kills to go along with a team-best four aces and setter Michael Ensign dished out 27 assists.

Jarom Warren had seven kills to lead the Olympians (0-8, 0-3).

Coast opened up a 22-11 lead in Game 1 only to watch the Olympians climb back into the fray with a 7-0 run, making it 22-18. However, the Pirates regrouped and used kills by Brandon Tanielu and Van Vuuren and a block by Tim Frydendall to close out the opener.

In Game 2, Coast jumped out to a 13-8 advantage and never let the Olympians earn more than two points in a row as the lead held up the rest of the way.

The third game was a carbon copy of the second game as OCC jumped out to an 18-13 advantage and played "back-and-forth" with the Olympians the rest of the way to preserve the win.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday on the road against first-place Golden West, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Friday, March 16 against San Diego City College, also at 6 p.m.
