Pirates go cold against Lasers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team found the familiar surroundings of the Peterson Gym not too hospitable as a cold shooting night led to a 53-38 Orange Empire Conference loss to visiting Irvine Valley on Wednesday night.

After holding even with the Lasers in the first half, 22-22, the Pirates (10-16, 2-7 in OEC) shot an ice 3-of-19 from the field with 13 turnovers. Theyfinished the night shooting just 28.6 percent from the floor (12-of-42).

For the Lasers (16-11, 7-2), a 31-point second half was more than enough as Shomari McCorkle led all scorers with 15 points. Megan Blackwell notched a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

For Orange Coast, Ashley Engeln led the offense with 11 points, while Amber Page added six off of the bench.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Saddleback, beginning at 5:30 p.m. for their annual Coaches vs. Cancer Night. All proceeds from Friday's game will be donated to the American Cancer Society to help them continue their battle against Cancer.
