Pirates go ice cold against Hornets

COSTA MESA -- The home cooking wasn't too appetizing for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as it opened up the second round of Orange Empire Conference play with a 61-39 loss to visiting Fullerton College on Friday night.

Alexandra Coleman-Thomas led the Hornets (17-7, 6-1) with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Aunjanay Chambers added 10 points, four assists and three, while teammate Loren Gurrola added 10 points and three steals.

For the Pirates (10-14, 2-5), Ashley Engeln led the way with nine points. OCC shot just 29.3 percent from the floor (17-of-58) and was just 2-of-13 from 3-point range. Even from the free-throw line, the pickings were slim as Coast hit just 3-of-10.

For the third time this season, the Pirates were held to under 40 points -- something that had been done just 12 times in the history of the program, dating back to 1977-78.

Trailing 34-20 at the half, the Hornets held the Pirates scoreless for the first six-plus minutes of the second half and opened up a 47-20 advantage, never looking back.

OCC will play at Santa Ana College on Friday before returning to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 8 against Irvine Valley, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
