Streaks come to an end for Pirates in loss to Dons

SANTA ANA -- A couple of very long streaks were snapped on Friday night as the Orange Coast College women's basketball team lost to Santa Ana, 61-53, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup played at SAC.

The win for the Dons (6-17, 1-8) was their first OEC win since 2009, a streak that lasted 34 games.

In addition, the win also snapped OCC's 21-game win streak against Santa Ana, dating back to 2002.

Both teams traded leads throughout the game. Trailing 54-53, the Pirates went the final 2:45 of the second half without scoring and the Dons hit enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Ashley Engeln led Coast (10-15, 2-6) with 16 points and four assists, while Jordyn Terukina added 12 and Jenna Arnett scored 11 to go along with nine rebounds. The rest of the Pirates combined to score just 14 points on 4-of-18 shooting.

Santa Ana was led by Anna Nguyen with 21 points and eight rebounds. Berlin Ohanesian added 17 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Jenna Flores added 12 points and nine rebounds.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday at home against Irvine Valley, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
