Pirates go 1-2 at Cuesta Invitational
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team lost its two-year run as champions of Cuesta College's Conoco/Phillips Invitational as the Pirates dropped two-of-three this past weekend.
The Pirates (4-4) opened things with a 56-52 win over L.A. Pierce on Thursday. Ashley Engeln led Coast with 13 points, while Michelle Angel added 12 and Tessie Pikula contributed 10.
On Friday, Orange Coast -- winners of 12 of the last 23 tournaments played at Cuesta College -- lost a heartbreaking 66-65 decision to Barstow in the championship semifinals. Jenna Arnett led all scorers with 19 points, while Pikula added 17 points and 13 rebounds (nine on the offensive glass).
In the third-place game, the Pirates fell to host Cuesta, 78-67. It was the first loss to the Cougars since 1996. Engeln led the way with 16 points, while Jordyn Terukina added 11 and Pikula tossed in 10.
OCC continues tournament action this weekend at the Irvine Valley College Tournament. Coast will open things with Grossmont on Thursday, beginning at 4 p.m. over at IVC.
