Pirates go cold in loss to El Camino
COSTA MESA -- It was a rough day inside the Peterson Gym for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team during Saturday's 57-44 nonconference loss to visiting El Camino College at the 2011 OCC Crossover.
The Pirates (1-1) shot an icy 20 percent from the field (15-for-72) and hit just 3-of-27 from 3-point range. Megan Hanson led Coast with 16 points, while the rest of the team managed just 28 points on 9-of-58 shooting (15 percent). Tessie Pikula added six points and grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, the Warriors are off to a 3-0 start and on Saturday, they were led by Christianna Willis, who scored 20 points. Teammate Ryann Drear added 17.
Both teams struggled to find any offensive flow and thanks to a late run by the Warriors, they led 28-22 at the half.
For a 13-minute stretch that began late in the first half and stretched into the second half, OCC managed to hit just three field goals and 10 total points as the deficit reached as many as 12 at 41-29.
But somehow, the Pirates used a stingy defense and gritty effort to stay in the contest and got to within seven at 51-44 with 1:16 left to play.
But that would be as close as Coast would get as the Warriors hit five free throws down the stretch to pull things out.
