Pirates roll past Rustlers, Chargers
COSTA MESA -- It was another dominating week for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team as they earned three-set sweeps over Golden West College on Wednesday and Cypress College on Friday.
The Pirates -- 15-0 overall and 7-0 in the Orange Empire Conference -- kicked the week off with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 win over longtime-rival Golden West on Wednesday at GWC. Nika Safavi was huge for the Pirates in that win, ripping 20 kills and anchoring the defense with 15 digs. Kyla Untalan stepped into a bigger role with teammate Kayla Ihrig out for the match and added 10 kills and 10 digs, while middle blocker Joey Payan came through with nine kills and four total blocks. Setter Sophie Vienna dished out 37 assists, while libero Kennedy Cutler joined the double-digit dig club with 10 digs of her own.
The fun continued on Friday as the Pirates -- ranked No. 4 in the state and California's last remaining undefeated team -- rolled to a 25-15, 25-16, 25-16 win. Ihrig returned to action and came through with 13 kills and six digs, while Safavi joined her Pirate teammate with 13 kills and four digs. Vienna paced the offense with 36 assists, while Cutler earned a team-best 12 digs.
With the pair of wins, OCC remains atop the Orange Empire Conference standings at 7-0, a win ahead of Saddleback (10-3 overall, 6-1 in the OEC), who fell in five sets to Irvine Valley on Friday night. The Pirates and Bobcats will meet up this Wednesday night inside OCC Peterson Gym, beginning at 6 p.m.
