Pirates finish second overall at State Preview
SOLVANG -- It was an impressive dress rehearsal for the Orange Coast College women's golf team as the Pirates took on the best of the best at the North/South State Preview this past weekend at the River Course at Alisal.
Site of this year's 3C2A Women's Golf State Championships, the Pirates took on the course, and the best teams from all of California and finished second overall with a two-round team score of 674. Reedley College took first overall, just seven strokes ahead of the Pirates with a 667, while Modesto College finished third with a 677. Mt. San Antonio (685), Sierra (729), College of the Canyons (737), San Joaquin Delta (738), Napa (747), Allan Hancock (766) and Santa Barbara City (779) rounded out the top-10.
The Pirates saw firsthand what a state championship venue looks like on Day 1 as the Pirates ended Sunday's round at 343, but the Pirates responded well in Day 2 with a 331, the lowest team round for the entire two-day event.
The best example of the two-round swing was sophomore Michelle Khin. After an opening-round 88, last year's all-state standout bounced back in a big way and carded a 77 for a two-day total of 165, seventh-best among all golfers in the field. One shot off of Khin's total was Pirate teammate Sophia Thibodeau, who carded an 84-82-166.
Other top OCC scores were turned in by Sofia Ingle (85-85-170), Nalani Sam (86-87-173), Lilly Thurston (99-94-193) and Audrey Crinella (99-96-195).
This year's 3C2A Women's Golf State Championship will take place on Nov. 16-17 at the Ranch Course at Alisal. The Pirates will need to continue their strong play to close out the Orange Empire Conference rounds before qualifying for state at the Southern California Regionals, which will be Nov. 9-10 at Olivas Links in Ventura.
