Pirates back in win column after topping Hornets

FULLERTON -- After a rare two-game losing streak, the Orange Coast College women's basketball team is back on the winning side of things after topping Fullerton College, 70-49 on Friday night in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

The offensive success was spread out for the Pirates (15-6, 3-2 in the OEC), with McKenzie Gillman leading the way with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, followed closely behind by Melaiah Joseph (11 points), Bianca Carter (11 points), Nicole Uballe (nine points) and Andrea Rico (eight points, six rebounds, three steals).

Coast found success from 3-point range with 11 made from beyond the arc, including three each from Joseph and Carter and a pair from Gillman.

Erin Choi had a big night for the Hornets with 25 points, but the Pirate defense held the rest of the FC squad to just 24 points on 9-of-37 shooting (24 percent).

Coast was slow out of the gates in the opening minutes as Fullerton grabbed a 7-1 lead early on, but OCC found its groove and used a 22-6 run to find a double-digit lead late in the second quarter. The lead continued to grow and got as high as 24 late in the fourth quarter, thanks to a rough night of long-range shooting by the Hornets, who finished just 3-of-19 from 3-point range.

The Pirates will wrap up their opening round through OEC play on Wednesday at home against first-place Saddleback College, beginning at 7 p.m.
