Pirates hold off Eagles, 73-70

SAN JACINTO -- It was a long drive rewarded for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates earned a hard-fought 73-70 win over Mt. San Jacinto College on Thursday night at MSJC.

Melaiah Joseph led the Pirate offense with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, while Nicole Uballe added 16 points and six rebounds. Andrea Rico provided scoring depth for Coast (5-2) with 10 points and four rebounds, as did Madisyn Foulk (seven points, three rebounds).

For the host Eagles (4-3), Karsen Marshall had 20 points, Kiara Williams added 19 points and eight assists and Kohen Marshall provided a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Williams and the Eagles came out shooting in the opening quarter and grabbed a 23-17 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

The MSJC lead grew to as many as nine (42-33 early in the third quarter), before the Pirates began to push back. An 8-0 run by Coast cut the deficit to just one at 46-45 with still plenty of time remaining.

In the final minute of the third quarter, back-to-back 3-pointers by Joseph turned a 3-point OCC deficit into an OCC advantage as the Pirates carried a 55-52 lead into the fourth.

Coast grabbed full control of the game midway through the fourth, using a 14-7 run to grab a 10-point lead (69-59) with just over four minutes remaining.

MSJC got back to within three in the final minute of the game and had two chances to tie things up, but both 3-point tries missed their mark to give the Pirates the win.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at home, against Sacramento City College, beginning at 2 p.m.
