Pirates fall to Chapman in season opener

ORANGE -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team pushed four-year program, Chapman University, to extra time on Wednesday night, but fell to the Panthers, 19-18, in the Pirates' season opener.

Sawyer McCormick had six goals for the Pirates, while Cade Zeilinger and Jack McCann each scored three. Otis McAdams tossed in a pair of goals, while single goals were earned by Dylan Morris, Ben Hecht, Jackson Williams and Stan Schuring

The goalie tandem of Igor Pinheiro and Gage Fojtasek combined for 17 saves.

Williams' goal came in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and that tally put OCC ahead, 15-12, but a pair of Panther goals trimmed the deficit down to one at 15-14 with less than four minutes remaining.

Hecht put Coast back up by two with 3:12 left in the match off an assist by Noah Sharp to make it 16-14 with under 3 minutes left. But, Chapman managed to tie the score with back-to-back scores, the final goal coming with six seconds remaining in regulation and the contest went into overtime.

From there, McCormick scored a pair of goals in the OT session, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers rallied back to top the Pirates in the final minutes of overtime.

Coast will compete at the Golden West Tournament on Sept. 12-13, opening with Ventura College on the 12th, beginning at 9:50 a.m.
