Pirates earn lopsided win over Tigers
COSTA MESA -- A dominating pair of quarters proved more than enough for the Orange Coast College men's water polo team as the Pirates rolled to a 26-10 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Riverside City College on Wednesday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.
Coast (12-3, 2-0 in the OEC) set the pace in the opening quarter and jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Tigers (3-6, 0-1). A pair of goals by Cade Zeilinger and Jackson Williams and a solo tally by Otis McAdams highlighted the scoring for the Pirates, while the OCC defense and goalkeeper Igor Pinheiro kept RCC off of the scoreboard for the opening 8 minutes.
Riverside battled back and made it a three-goal contest by halftime as a 4-1 Tiger run capped off the second quarter and trimmed Coast's advantage to 9-6.
That would be as close as the Tigers would get as OCC left RCC in its wake, scoring 12 unanswered goals in the third quarter to lead 21-6. Four more Zeilinger goals and three goals from Noah Sharp set the pace for the Pirate offense.
Zeilinger finished with seven goals total, while Williams added four. Sawyer McCormick tossed in a pair of goals to go along with four assists, while Harrison Cook, Stan Schuring and Owen Cugoni each scored twice. Jack McCann had a solid all-around performance with a goal, three assists and two steals.
Pinheiro finished with 11 saves over three quarters of play before Dominic Neves earned three saves in the fourth quarter.
Coast will return to action on Wednesday at home, against Saddleback College, beginning at 3 p.m.
