Pirates fall to Compton at WLAC tourney

CULVER CITY -- A rough second half doomed the Orange Coast College men's basketball team as the Pirates fell to Compton College, 96-80, on Day 1 of the Wild West Shootout, hosted by West L.A. College.

The buckets were falling early for the Pirates in the first half. Led by the hot shooting of Adrian Gonzalez and his 20-point first half, Coast grabbed a 51-40 lead on the Coyotes. Coast his 12 3-pointers in that opening 20 minutes, including six from Gonzalez and three from Jay Fromm

But Compton regrouped and responded in the second half, holding OCC to just 29 points in the second half. The Coyotes controlled the paint, outrebounding the Pirates, 40-20 overall and outscored Coast in the paint, 52-14 to negate OCC's strong perimeter shooting.

Gonzalez finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, while Jayden Baude came off the bench for 16 points. Chris Obiajulu and Jay Fromm each scored 13 points.

Coast will return to action on Friday against San Bernardino Valley on Day 2 of the Wild West Shootout at WLAC, beginning at 1 p.m.
