Pirates cruise to 9-0 win over Roadrunners

WHITTIER -- It was a solid day's work for the Orange Coast College women's tennis team as the Pirates rolled past host Rio Hondo College, 9-0, on Tuesday in a nonconference matchup.

In singles play, the Pirates (11-0) won 72 games and lost just four, with straight-set wins coming from Mebuki Kitakuni (6-0, 6-0), Kaylee Ho (6-1, 6-0), Chantel Kamel (6-0, 6-0), Ava Bocek (6-0, 6-0), Amanda Montanez (6-1, 6-1) and Minami Saito (6-1, 6-0).

The dominance continued for Coast in doubles play, with wins coming from Kitakuni/Kamel (8-2), Ho/Bocek (8-0) and Saito/Terra Saharyildizi (8-3).

The first big test for the Pirates will take place on Thursday when they host Riverside, beginning at 2 p.m. The Tigers head into Thursday's matchup 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the Orange Empire Conference and have shared the conference title with the Pirates in each of the past two seasons.

OCC (11-0, 2-0) is just one of two teams left in the state without a loss, joining L.A. Mission College (12-0). RCC's one blemish this year was to the undefeated Eagles back on Jan. 30 (8-1). Since that loss, the Tigers have won seven straight, including four straight 9-0 wins over Southwestern, Rio Hondo, Mt. San Antonio and Fullerton.

The second of two OEC meetings between the Pirates and Tigers will take place on Thursday, March 26 at RCC, beginning at 2 p.m.
