Pirates rout Hawks in series opener
COSTA MESA -- It was a dominating performance for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates rolled in five innings over visiting Santiago Canyon, 15-1, on Tuesday at the OCC Softball Stadium.
The hits and runs came early and often for the Pirates (11-10, 5-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) as they scored 15 runs on 13 hits in just four innings worth of at-bats.
Victoria Ruiz went 2-for-2, including a three-run home run with three runs scored for the Pirates. Jaden Fraser added two hits, two runs and three RBI and Marissa Sardinas came through with two hits, a run and two RBI. The bottom of the order came through for OCC as well as Afton Janke went 2-for-2 with three runs and one RBI, while Christina Contreras went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
That was plenty of run support for Pirate pitcher Laura Episom (5-2), who held the Hawks (10-16, 2-5) to just one run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Game 2 of this three-game set will take place on Thursday at SCC, beginning at 2 p.m. with the series finale back at OCC on Friday, also at 2 p.m.
The Pirates will be back at the OCC softball stadium on Wednesday for a nonconference tilt with Long Beach City College, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
