Pirates blank Coyotes in home opener
COSTA MESA -- It was quite the home opener for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates no-hit the Compton College Coyotes in a five-inning, 10-0, win on Friday at the OCC Softball Stadium.
Georgia Gruber kept the Coyote bats quiet through the first four innings, holding Compton (2-3) hitless through the first four innings, allowing just three runners to reach base off of walks. In the fifth, Kelsey McNair made her season debut memorable, striking out the side in the fifth to complete the five-inning no-no.
While the pitchers did their job, the bats of the Pirates (1-1) did theirs, pounding out 11 hits in just four innings worth of at-bats. Marissa Sardinas went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Kayla Vargas went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Kimora Tuipala added two hits, including a three-run home run to cap off a five-run fourth inning.
Coast used a pair of big innings -- a five-run second and a five-run fourth to highlight the run-scoring for the day.
The Pirates will now head to Citrus College for games against Mt. San Jacinto (3:30 p.m.) and the host Owls (6 p.m.) on Saturday. OCC's next home game will take place on Tuesday against El Camino, beginning at 2 p.m.
