Pirates respond loudly with 10-5 win over Santa Ana

COSTA MESA -- After a head-scratching setback on Tuesday at Santa Ana College, the Orange Coast College softball team showed some fight and used a big inning to roll past the visiting Dons, 10-5, on Thursday at the OCC Softball Stadium.

After falling behind, 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Pirates scored a run on a Victoria Ruiz RBI-single to left field, but it appeared to be just a one-run frame, but a costly two-out error helped pave the way to seven more runs -- all unearned -- in the third. Lauren Trivino followed with a two-run double to left field and that was followed by a two-run single to left-center off the bat of Josie Zamora. After another error put two runners on base, Kelsey McNair launched a three-run home run over the Pirate scoreboard to cap off OCC's eight-run frame.

The Dons got to within three at 8-5 courtesy of a pair of solo home runs by Ihilani Berard in the fourth and sixth innings. But, Coast pulled away in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI-single by Marissa Sardinas and an RBI-ground out off the bat of McNair, who finished the day 3-for-5, with two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI.

Trivino went 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Ruiz and Jaden Fraser each went 2-for-4.

Relief pitcher Laura Episom (2-1) picked up the win for OCC (6-9, 3-2 in the Orange Empire Conference), allowing just those two solo HRs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

Berard finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI for the Dons (3-14, 1-4).

Game 3 of this three-game set takes place back at Santa Ana College on Friday, beginning at 12 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Saturday, March 21, as the Pirates host Bakersfield in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
