Pirates top Warriors in extras, 6-5

TORRANCE -- It was a nice win for the Orange Coast College softball team as they showed poise and toppled a strong El Camino squad, 6-5, in eight innings on Wednesday afternoon at ECC.

Coast (8-9) jumped out in front 5-0 early before the Warriors (18-6) rallied with two runs in the second and three in the sixth to force extras.

But in the top of the eighth, the Pirates took advantage of ECC's fourth error of the afternoon to start their winning frame. After Lauren Trivino reached on that error, she advanced to third on a bunt single by Christina Contreras and scored on an RBI-fielder's choice by Marissa Sardinas

OCC relief pitcher, Laura Episom (4-1) came through for the Pirates, throwing three scoreless innings to pick up the win. After OCC grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth, Episom, who held the Warriors to just one hit and one walk during her time in the circle, retired the first three batters she faced in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win for the Pirates.

An error, a hit by pitch and wild pitch put OCC runners on second and third in the top of the first and Kayla Vargas made the Warriors pay with a two-run triple to right-center, putting OCC ahead, 2-0. Victoria Ruiz followed with an RBI-single to score Vargas to make it 3-0.

Starting pitcher Daniella Sanchez got out of an early ECC threat and in the second, OCC jumped ahead, 5-0, thanks to an RBI-single by Maiah Rodriguez and another ECC error which plated Coast's fifth run of the game.

Rodriguez, Ruiz and Trivino each had two hits for OCC.

Coast returns to action on Friday at Citrus College, beginning at 1 p.m. The Pirates will return to the OCC Softball Stadium on Saturday for a doubleheader with Bakersfield College, beginning at 1 p.m.
