Pirates improve to 20-0 with sweep over Griffins
COSTA MESA -- The regular season is winding down and the quality of play from the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team is ramping up after the Pirates swept past visiting Grossmont College on Friday to wrap up another 3-0, 3-0 week of action.
The Pirates -- winners of 20 straight without a loss -- opened the week at Miramar College on Wednesday night, where they dispatched of the Jets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19. Ben Bray and Victor Loiola each led Coast with eight kills each, while Ashtonn Florentin added six kills and Seth Sainz knocked down five kills. The setting duo of Mason Grubbs and Jett Reyes each dished out 14 assists, with Grubbs also leading the Pirates on defense with seven digs.
On Friday afternoon, Coast reached the 20-0 mark with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-20 win over the Griffins inside OCC Peterson Gym. Sainz and Loiola each ripped seven kills for Coast, while Bray added six and Florentin added five. Grubbs (13 assists, team-best three kills) and Reyes (11 assists) moved the ball around for everyone who played, while Bjorn Hawe came through with four total blocks (three solo) and three of OCC's 14 aces for the day.
Coast will take to the road next week, playing at Palomar College on Wednesday (5 p.m.) and at Santiago Canyon on Friday (6 p.m.) before setting up a pair of home clashes to wrap up the regular season. Coast's final week of action will be inside the Peterson Gym against Irvine Valley on April 8 (6 p.m.) and Golden West on Friday on April 10 (6 p.m.).
