Pirates improve to 14-0 with sweep over Comets

COSTA MESA -- The winning continues for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team as the Pirates improved to 14-0 for the season with a three-set sweep over visiting Palomar College on Friday inside the Peterson Gym.

Since a four-set win over the Hornets on Feb. 6, the Pirates have 24 straight sets over their next eight matches, including Friday's 25-11, 25-20, 25-18 win over the winless Comets.

The win wrapped up another solid week of play for the Pirates, who won on the road on Wednesday, beating Grossmont, 25-19, 25-16, 25-9.

In Wednesday's win over the Griffins, Victor Loiola and Ben Bray each led the way with eight kills. Bray also added three aces, four digs and a pair of block assists, while Loiola matched Bray with three aces to go along with three digs and a solo block.

Jett Reyes dished out 18 assists, while Keagin Christenson contributed 13 assists. 

In Friday's win over the Comets, Laird Garcia swung at will, ripping eight kills with no errors on just 10 attempts (.800 hitting percentage), while Dylan Mister was 8-of-13 in kill attempts with just one error and a .538 percentage.

Kaden Wong led the Pirate setters with 17 assists, while Mason Grubbs added 15. 

Aiden Fisher and Joey Thalken anchored the OCC defense with four digs each.

The win keeps the Pirates atop the Southern Region, Coastal Conference standings with defending state champion, Golden West (13-0, 3-0), who play Friday night at Miramar College.

Coast will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday against Santiago Canyon College, beginning at 6 p.m.
