Pirates roll through El Camino in three-set sweep

COSTA MESA -- In just over an hour, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team took care of business, sweeping past visiting El Camino College, 25-14, 25-16, 25-13, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Quentin Ryan led the Pirates (5-0) with nine kills, while Victor Loiola added six kills and Ben Bray and Seth Sainz each chipping in five. Mason Grubbs paced the offense with 13 assists, while Gabriel Nichter came up with a team-best four digs.

Coast set the pace for the entire match right away as the Pirates led early and never looked back in the opening set. OCC grabbed a 16-10 lead on the Warriors (2-1) and maintained that advantage throughout the rest of the set.

ECC led early through the second set before an 11-3 Pirate run put the hosts back in front for good. Back-to-back blocks from Laird Garcia and a pair of Sainz kills helped spark that mid-set turnaround.

In the third set, Coast led 9-7 before pulling way from the Warriors with a 12-3 run, with big kills coming from Collin Applegate.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Fullerton College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday against Long Beach City College, also at 6 p.m.
