Pirates take first overall at Cuyamaca Classic

JAMUL -- The Orange Coast College men's golf team braved the elements on Tuesday and came home with a first-place showing at the season-opening Cuyamaca College Classic, played at Steele Canyon Golf Club.

Both the Pirates and host Cuyamaca College each shot team scores of 385, but the Pirates took the top spot overall, thanks to the sixth-golfer tiebreaker. Cypress College finished third with a 387, as did College of the Desert, so the upcoming 2025 season shapes up to be one of the deepest and most talented group of golfers in recent memory.

The Pirates showed talent and depth in the season-opening contest of the season, with eight golfers shooting within 11 shots of each other. Leading the way for Coast was Matt Ingram, who shot a 1-over-par 72, which was third-lowest among all golfers on Tuesday.

Troy Tarvin and Victor Chaparro each carded 75s for the Pirates, while Nic Borelli carded a 76. Other top OCC scores for the round included Tyler Chapman, (81), Nate Rhee (82) and Tate Garman (83).

Up next, the Pirates will travel to Soboba Springs Golf Club in San Jacinto for the MSJC Eagle Golf Invitational, which takes place on Monday at 9 a.m.
