Pirates all smiles after 3-1 win over Hawks

ORANGE -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team got a huge team effort and found the "win" column with a 3-1 road win over Santiago Canyon on Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

It's been an uphill battle for the Pirates this year after picking up a win in the opening match of the season. Finally, the bounces found OCC's way against the host Hawks.

After giving up the first goal of the match, the Pirates quickly responded in the 13th minute when Collin Lacher ripped a shot into the back of the net to even things at a goal apiece.

It stayed that way for the remainder of the first half, but just three minutes into the second half, the Pirates took the lead for good with a goal courtesy of Anthony O'Neill off an assist from Logan Yapelli, putting Coast up, 2-1.

The OCC defense did its job well, holding the Hawks to just three total shots, while the Pirates took 11.

Finally, in the 70th minute, Qhawe Makaula picked a great time for a goal as he took a pass from Max Ricuarte and buried his opportunity to put OCC up 3-1.

Cesar Pedroza needed just one save to preserve the win for OCC, while SCC's Diego Saldivar had two saves in goal.

Coast will return to action on Friday at home against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
