Pirates bounce back with 9-4 win over Eagles

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday and responded with a 9-4 win over visiting Mt. San Jacinto College on Tuesday at John Altobelli Ballpark.

The Pirates (5-5), winners of five of their last six games, jumped ahead early on the Eagles (5-4) and never gave the guests a chance to get back into the game.

It started with a three-run first inning for OCC. Alan Choo walked, reached second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI-single by Tyler Covington and just two batters into the game, Coast was up, 1-0. A Zach Boynton walk and a double-steal put runners on second and third for the Pirates and both baserunners were cashed in before the inning came to an end. An RBI-grounder by Jake Wood and a run-scoring single off the bat of Flynn Barnes put the Pirates in front, 3-0.

MSJC picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third, but Coast regained its three-run advantage in the bottom of the frame. A two-out single by Andrew Chorbagian was followed up by an RBI-double to left-center by Wood, which scored Chorbagian for a 4-2 OCC advantage. Kael Corridan stepped up and drove in Wood with an RBI-single to left to cap off the third, putting the Pirates out in front, 5-2.

From there Coast scored one run in each of the next four innings to continue to apply pressure on the Eagle pitching staff.

Meanwhile, OCC starter Anthony Rasic (2-1) pitched seven strong innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out six. Landon Veirs took care of business over the final two innings, allowing no runs, one hit and one strikeout to preserve the win for the Pirates.

Covington finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI to lead the Pirate bats. Corridan went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Liam Stuppy added two hits, a run and an RBI.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at Southwestern College, beginning at 1 p.m. OCC's next home game will be against those same Jaguars on Saturday, Feb. 21, beginning at 12 p.m.
