Ihrig/Vienna capture OEC Pairs title!
IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball duo of Kayla Ihrig and Sophie Vienna battled a tough field and captured the Orange Empire Conference pairs title on Saturday at Irvine Valley College.
After a Round of 16 win, Ihrig/Vienna earned a 21-16, 21-18 quarterfinals victory that send the Pirate duo into the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Ihrig/Vienna earned a spot for the championship after sweeping past Cori Willcoxson/ Kayla Ostovar, 21-15, 21-14.
Taking on Golden West College duo of Maren Matthews/Meghan Freck, Coast edged out the Rustlers, 21-18 in the opening set but fell in the second set, 15-21, setting up a winner-take-all third set. There, Ihrig/Vienna bounced back and won the title by taking the third, 15-12.
Ihrig/Vienna will be the top seed from the Orange Empire Conference, joining two other Pirate pairs at the Southern California Regional Pairs Finals. The OCC duo of Brynn Bisher/Nika Safavi are the fifth seed out of the OEC, while fellow Pirates, Lola Fernsten/Ella Hardstaff are seeded seventh out of the conference.
