Pirates battle for a pair of wins over Chargers, Bobcats

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team was pushed to the brink ... twice ... on Friday, earning a pair of 3-2 Orange Empire Conference wins over Cypress College and Saddleback College at the Newland Beach Volleyball Courts.

In the win over the Bobcats, the Pirates (13-8 overall, 10-3 in the OEC) earned three straight-set wins from teammates Kayla Ihrig/Sophie Vienna (21-9, 21-17), Nika Safavi/Brynn Bisher (21-11, 21-15) and Anjali Clinton/Sanampreet Samra (21-19, 21-13).

Against the Chargers, it was as easy as 1-2-3 for the Pirates, with straight-set wins coming from their top-3 duos of Ihrig/Vienna (21-10, 21-14), Safavi/Bisher (21-12, 21-3) and Lola Fernsten/Ella Hardstaff (21-12, 21-10).

With the win, OCC sits alone in second place in the OEC standings, won win ahead of third-place Saddleback (9-8, 9-4) with the final week of the regular season left to go.

Coast will wrap up the regular season at Golden West College on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
