Pirates go 2-2 at Cuesta tourney
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team went 2-2 overall at the Cuesta College Water Polo Tournament this past weekend, picking up a pair of wins over Cabrillo (23-4) and host Cuesta (11-5), while falling to Santa Barbara (12-5) and Long Beach (15-8).
In the loss to the Vaqueros, Evalyn Galeana had two goals and a steal to lead the way for OCC, while single goals were scored by Brooke Kaltenbach, Layla Vargas and Tatam Rodgers. Goalie Savannah Pena had nine saves in the loss.
Coast quickly bounced back with a blowout win over Cabrillo, thanks in large part to a 7-0 first-quarter attack by the Pirate offense that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Hayden Clark, who led the way with four goals, scored three in the first quarter alone. Taryn Mallon and Kedra Escarzaga each added three goals, while Kaltenbach, Rodgers, Sarah Lute and Finley Munchoff each scored twice. Pena picked up the win and recorded five saves along the way for OCC.
Saturday's action started with a 15-8 setback to the Vikings, with Munchoff, Kaltenbach and Emma Willis each scoring a pair of goals to lead the Coast offense. Pena notched a season-best 11 saves, but it wasn't enough against the Vikings.
In the tourney finale against the host Cougars, Coast jumped out with the first four goals of the contest and led 8-2 after three quarters before cruising to the victory. Vargas, Clark and Ariah Martinez each scored two goals for the Pirates, while Pena did her job with six saves in the win.
Coast will stay home this weekend and host the OCC Tournament, beginning on Friday against Saddleback, beginning at 8 a.m. Coast will take on Long Beach at 12:20 p.m. on Friday as well. Saturday, the Pirates will open things against Riverside City College at 8 a.m., followed by a rematch with Santa Barbara at 11:15 a.m.
