Pirates sweep past SAC, SCC to remain atop OEC

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team has all but wrapped up the Orange Empire Conference after Friday's two wins over Santiago Canyon (5-0) and Santa Ana (5-0) at the Great Park.

With the win, the first-place Pirates (14-1, 12-0 in the OEC) maintain their two-win lead over Golden West (12-6, 10-2) with one tri-match remaining. OCC will take on Saddleback (10 a.m.) and Riverside (11 a.m.) on Friday at the Newland Courts and a win there will wrap up their third OEC title over the past four seasons.

Against Santiago Canyon on Friday, Coast only had three matches against the shorthanded Hawks and went a perfect 3-for-3 with the duos of Jordan Packer/Kayla Ihrig (21-19, 21-18), Sophia Wirtzer/Camryn Hayek (21-6, 21-6) and Nika Safavi/Madison Hopkins (21-14, 21-10) earning wins for the Pirates.

Against the Dons, the winning kept on coming, thanks to straight-set triumphs from Packer/Ihrig (21-6, 21-11), Wirtzer/Hayek (21-10, 21-10), Safavi/Hopkins (21-13, 21-13), Reagan Anderson/Ashlyn Couch (21-13, 21-13) and Kelsey Gomarko/Pearl Miller (forfeit).
