Orange Coast College Announces Pause of Football Program for Fall 2026

Orange Coast College Announces Pause of Football Program for Fall 2026

COSTA MESA - In a decision focused on the long-term success of its football program and the well-being of its student-athletes, Orange Coast College (OCC) will not compete in football during the Fall 2026 season. Under the leadership of Head Coach Joel Gonzalez, this pause will allow the program to rebuild with intention and return stronger in Fall 2027.

Over the past several months, the program has faced challenges in building a full roster and maintaining a coaching staff. Currently, OCC does not have the roster size necessary to support safe and competitive play. Football requires a significantly larger roster to ensure both student safety and a quality competitive experience. Continuing under current conditions would not set student-athletes up for success.

"We care deeply about our student-athletes, and this pause allows us to rebuild in a way that reflects the experience they deserve," said OCC President Dr. Angelica Suarez.

Although OCC will not compete in football during the 2026 season, the college remains fully committed to supporting its student-athletes throughout this transition. OCC will provide comprehensive support to ensure students continue to thrive physically, personally, and academically.

An Intentional Rebuild

During this time, OCC will focus on rebuilding the program through targeted recruitment, strengthening program infrastructure, and rebuilding the coaching staff.

"This gives us the opportunity to rebuild the program the right way, with a strong foundation for our return," said Jason Kehler, OCC Athletic Director. "We are all in for Fall 2027 and beyond. This pause is about the future of Coast football."

Looking Ahead

The College's goal is to return in Fall 2027 with a full and competitive roster, positioning OCC football for long-term success. This approach has proven effective at peer institutions, including San Bernardino Valley College in 2024, which implemented a similar pause and returned to competition.

A Message of Appreciation

OCC recognizes the importance of its football program to students, alumni, and the community and appreciates the continued support as the College works toward a strong return.
