Bio
The star of Jane Hilgendorf’s Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team, Laurie Adams led the Lady Pirates to the state championship game in both of her seasons, finishing second in 1981 and first in 1982. Along the way, the four-year former varsity standout outside hitter from Estancia High won nearly every award she was eligible for. In 1981, she was a first-team All–South Coast Conference selection for the conference champion Pirates, the team’s most inspirational player, and was also named to the state all-tournament team. In ’82, she again led the Pirates to the SCC crown. They also captured the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions title, the Southern California Regionals and Player of the Year and the most valuable player in both the regional and state tournaments. Statistics weren’t kept in those years, but Hilgendorf says she is sure Laurie would rank at the top of the school’s all-time best. She continued her collegiate career on scholarship at UC Santa Barbara, earning a B.A. in liberal studies in 1986. She later received her multiple subject teaching credential at Long Beach State and now teaches Kindergarten at Mariner’s Elementary School here in the Newport-Mesa School District. She and husband Richard reside in Costa Mesa. Laurie’s sister, Lynn Adams, a former national champion racquetball player, was inducted into the OCC Alumni Hall of Fame in 1986.
