Bio
It was not long after he opened his Huntington Beach office that Ben "Doc" Mason, this year's meritorious Hall of Fame inductee, became Orange Coast's team physician and number one fan. That was in 1949 and Mason has been around to watch the Pirates - - and the college - - grow ever since. In those days, the players lived in the barracks of the old air base and even took their meals in the team dining room. Coach Ray Rosso and two assistants comprised the staff. Since then, the football staff has grown to 10 coaches, a full-time certified trainer and a readily available orthopedic surgeon. The only thing that hasn't changed is Mason, who continues to give OCC's football players the best medical care. He's seen the Pirate football program under four head coaches since Rosso resigned in 1955 - - Al Irwin (1956), Steve Musseau (1957-61) , Dick Tucker (1962-85) and Bill Workman (since 1956) - - and has never wavered in his support of OCC football. Last fall, the Pirates named their newly-renovated field house at LeBard Stadium for Mason in appreciation of his many years of service The Huntington Beach resident was OCC’s “Outstanding Citizen" in 1978.
