Pirates earn doubleheader sweep over Citrus

GLENDORA -- The Orange Coast College softball team came out swinging as the 2025 season opened up with a doubleheader sweep over host Citrus College on Friday evening.
Coast held on to top the Owls, 8-7 in the opener and completed the DH sweep with an 11-7 win in the nightcap.
The bats came out hot in the opener as Coast jumped out to a 6-1 lead early on before Citrus battled back to even things at 7 before a sixth-inning run gave OCC the lead for good. The game winner came after a Citrus error put Maiah Rodriguez on second base with two outs. The next batter, Kayla Vargas, came through with an RBI-single to score Rodriguez and put OCC up, 8-7. Relief pitcher Kelsey McNair picked up the win after pitching the final two innings and held the Owls to scoreless and hitless with two strikeouts along the way.
McKenzie Koshi went 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI from the No. 9 spot for OCC. Vargas went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Reyna Hernandez added two hits and two runs scored.
It was another strong start for the Pirates in Game 2 thanks to a 7-run first inning helped pave the way for the doubleheader sweep. The big blow in that inning came off the bat of Hernandez, who ripped a grand-slam home run to cap off the seven-run outburst. Jasmyn Morales, who drove in a pair of runs in the opening game, ripped a two-run home run in the first as well, giving OCC the lead for good, in spite of another Citrus rally. Morales finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Anastasia Quintana added three hits, a run and an RBI.
The host team got to within a pair of runs at 8-6 after four innings before RBI singles by Kimora Tuipala, Olivia Pedraza and Quintana pushed the lead up to 11-6.
OCC will have its home opener on Thursday against El Camino College, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
