Pirates show no fear at Long Beach State invitational

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team competed against some of the top four-year colleges in the area on Saturday at the 2019 Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State University.

It was a great experience for the Pirates, who went up against schools like Long Beach State, Pepperdine University, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Biola, Cal State Bakersfield, UC Irvine as well as several other top two-year programs in the area, including Cerritos, El Camino, Santa Monica and Long Beach City.

Among the several top times and performances for the Pirates included the women's 4x400-meter relay, with the OCC foursome of Charlotte Kraushaar, Isabella Alston, Katherine Ngo and Paige Fults, finishing fourth overall with a time of 4 minutes, 22.09 seconds, the fastest time among all two-year schools in the event.

Ngo posted OCC's lone top-10 individual performance, placing ninth in the 400 with a time of 1:03.76.

In the field events, Julie Marinaro finished eighth overall in the high jump with a mark of 4-feet, 7 1/2 inches, while Alison Young finished 10th in the pole vault after clearing 9-6 1/4.

The Pirate multi-event competitors will return to action on Wednesday at the OEC Heptathlon/Decathlon, hosted by Santa Ana College, beginning at 10 a.m. On Friday and Saturday, the Pirates will compete at Cal State Fullerton at the 2019 Ben Brown Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m.
