WALNUT -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team went 2-2 against some stiff competition this past weekend at the Mt. San Antonio College Tournament.
In the opener on Friday, OCC (3-2) rolled to an 18-7 win over El Camino. The Pirates jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the first two quarters and never looked back. A trio of Pirates -- Andrej Maodus, Ryan Baumann and Luke Rhone -- each scored four goals, while Charlie Shobe added two goals. Solo tallies were turned in by Anthony Shin, Nicholas Fichman, Garret Harryman and Wyatt Ramirez, while Garrett Gendron dished out a team-best three assists.
In the Friday afternoon matchup with Sierra, the Pirates came up just short and fell to the Wolverines, 11-9. Fichman led the OCC offense with four goals, while Baumann added two, with Maodus, Rhone and Felipe Rocha each scoring once.
Halloran earned six saves in goal for the Pirates.
On Saturday, Coast took on host Mt. San Antonio and notched a hard-fought 9-8 win over the Mounties. Fichman was dominant for the Pirates with five goals, while Rocha added two, with Baumann and Arnaud Parmentier tossing in one goal each.
Halloran came up with big stops down the stretch in goal for Coast and finished with nine saves total.
In the tourney finale for the Pirates, they took on Cuesta and fell to the Cougars, 9-5. Baumann led the way with three goals, while Rhone and Fichman each added one. In goal, Halloran came up with eight saves.
OCC will kick off Orange Empire Conference competition on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Riverside City College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's first home match will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Cypress, also at 3 p.m.
